ENVIRONMENT AND PUBLIC HEALTH IN NEVINNOMYSSK AND OTHER REGIONS OF EUROKHIM PRESENCE

The program Environment and Public Health in Nevinnomyssk and Other Regions of EuroChem Company Presence was carried out from 2006 through 2009 under the Global Development Alliance partnership mechanism with funding from EuroChem Company and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The Program was aimed at bettering the social environment in the city and raising the standard of living of its residents through improving the quality of social and medical services; involving community members into conservation and landscaping activities in the city; and promoting healthy lifestyles.

EuroChem Company invested 13,905,000 rubles in the Program to match the 3,750,000 rubles from USAID.

The Program is managed by the Fund for Sustainable Development.

The city of Nevinnomyssk in Stavropol Krai, where Nevinnomyssky AZOT, one of EuroChem Company’s production facilities is located, was selected as the pilot site for the Program.

Following citizen initiatives, concrete projects addressing local social and conservation issues were implemented in Nevinnomyssk. These projects were aimed at the following:

  • Preservation and rehabilitation of child health through improving the environment in children’s social institutions;
  • Utilization of energy and resource saving techniques at social institutions (schools, kindergartens, orphanages, hospitals, etc);
  • Improving and landscaping city areas with the participation of local small-sized businesses, public organizations, and local volunteers.

The key mechanism of the Program were grant contests of community project initiatives that allows to identify new creative resources and strengthen social partnerships between local government, citizens and businesses. Under the Program, city residents, authors of projects, were able to realize their aspirations and plans to improve the social environment in their city.

Fifty five organizations of the city became the participants in the Program: schools, kindergartens, health care institutions and other social organizations, NGOs, and the local media - all of which prepared proposals for social/environmental projects.

A total of 24 grants were awarded under the Program to 21 organizations for an amount of 11,253,218 rubles. As a result, nearly 150 individuals attended the Program’s “school of social planning”; the number of Program beneficiaries has reached more than 30,000; and nearly 3,500 volunteers helped with the Program’s projects.

At least 50 city business firms were involved in these projects. For each ruble of the Program’s funding 54 kopecks were raised from partnerships with the city’s business and municipal organizations.

The Environment and Public Health in Nevinnomyssk and Other Regions of EuroChem Company Program Presence serves as an example of successful social investment targeted toward turning local communities into active social partners aware of regional challenges and capable of addressing them with the use of modern social technologies.
